The management of Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar, Bali, has declared a 24-hour closure of all flight operations in observance of Nyepi, the Hindu Day of Silence, scheduled for March 29, 2025. This decision affects a total of 425 flights, comprising 207 domestic and 218 international services, according to the airport's general manager, Ahmad Syaugi Shahab.
The closure will commence at 6 a.m. Central Indonesian Time (UTC+8) on March 29 and will last until 6 a.m. the following day, March 30. Shahab emphasized that during this period, all flight services would be suspended, with an exception made for medical evacuation and emergency flights, which may still operate as necessary.
To facilitate any potential emergency landings and medivac requests, the airport will maintain a team of operational, security, and technical personnel on standby at the operations control center. This measure ensures that the airport is prepared for unforeseen circumstances while respecting the traditional observance of Nyepi.
The decision to close the airport aligns with the cultural significance of Nyepi, a day dedicated to self-reflection and silence among the Hindu community in Bali. The airport's closure has been officially communicated through a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued by AirNav, Indonesia’s state-owned air navigation authority. In preparation for the resumption of flights after Nyepi, 19 aircraft will be positioned at the airport on the day prior to the closure. This is aimed at ensuring a smooth transition back to normal operations once the day of silence concludes. Shahab highlighted that the closure might serve as an opportunity for airport management to review and enhance their service offerings.
"The momentum of the no travel rule during Nyepi allows us to not only honor this cultural practice but also to evaluate our operational facilities, which have been functioning continuously for a year to maintain our service standards," he remarked.
