Indonesia Allocates Rp333.6 Billion in Sukuk Funds for Key Bali Projects

In a significant financial move aimed at bolstering development in Bali, the Indonesian Ministry of Finance has announced the disbursement of Rp333.6 billion (approximately US$18 million) through May 2026, sourced from Government Sharia Securities (Sukuk). These funds are intended to support a range of government projects across the island, enhancing both infrastructure and educational facilities, as confirmed by Supendi, Head of the Bali Provincial Office of the Directorate General of Treasury (DJPb).

The allocation of these funds reflects a strategic investment in several key institutions. Notably, Udayana University has been granted Rp100 billion (about US$5.4 million) designated for the acquisition of office and laboratory equipment, along with the construction of a new laboratory building. This infusion of capital is expected to significantly enhance the educational capabilities of the university, positioning it to better serve its student population and the broader community.

In addition to educational enhancements, substantial investments have been made in infrastructure. A noteworthy allocation of Rp105 billion (approximately US$5.6 million) has been set aside for the construction and rehabilitation of the Singaraja-Mengwitani national road, a critical route that not only facilitates transportation but also supports economic activities across the region.

The security sector has also benefited from this funding initiative. The Gianyar Police Department has received Rp4.26 billion (around US$230,000) to procure furniture and to establish a new police service center at the local police station. Furthermore, the Bali Regional Police Mobile Brigade Unit was allocated Rp20.37 billion (approximately US$1.1 million) aimed at constructing residential flats for its personnel, thereby improving living conditions for those serving in the area.

Moreover, the 834th Infantry Battalion, stationed in Nagekeo, East Nusa Tenggara, has been allotted Rp29 billion (about US$1.5 million) for equipment procurement and housing development, illustrating the government's commitment to enhancing the operational capacity of its defense forces.

Other beneficiaries include the Bali Police School, which received Rp5.71 billion (approximately US$309,000) for furniture and accommodation for students, and Ganesha University of Education (Undiksha) in Singaraja, awarded Rp59.59 billion (around US$3.2 million) for educational equipment and laboratory construction. The Bali Provincial Office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs also received Rp9.64 billion (about US$522,000) for similar purposes, showcasing a broad commitment to improving educational and religious infrastructure.

These allocations are part of a larger budgetary context, as the central government reported state expenditures in Bali totaling Rp8.68 trillion (approximately US$470 million) from January to May 2026. This figure represents 41.84 percent of the total budget ceiling for the province, which stands at Rp20.7 trillion (around US$1.1 billion). The proactive use of Sukuk funding underscores the Indonesian government's strategy to finance public projects in accordance with Sharia principles, which has gained increasing traction in recent years.

Sukuk, or Sovereign Sukuk, are government securities that not only adhere to Islamic law but also represent ownership interests in underlying assets, allowing for both domestic and foreign currency denominations. The recent disbursements highlight the government's dual focus on infrastructure and education, aimed at fostering sustainable growth and development in Bali.

As the projects funded by these Sukuk investments progress, they are expected to significantly contribute to the region's economic resilience and social infrastructure, providing long-term benefits for the residents of Bali and enhancing the island's appeal as a center of education and commerce.
