Helium Balloon Ignites Blaze at Chez Gado-Gado Restaurant in Seminyak

A fire erupted at the Chez Gado-Gado restaurant located on Jalan Camplung Tanduk in Seminyak, Bali, on the evening of August 30, 2026, reportedly ignited by a helium balloon that came into contact with a candle flame. The incident unfolded around 7:30 PM local time, prompting immediate response from local authorities.

According to Iptu I Gede Adi Saputra Jaya, the Head of Public Relations at the Denpasar Police, eyewitness accounts suggest that a guest celebrating a birthday had decorated the dining area with helium balloons. Moments after the candles were lit, a loud popping sound was heard from the direction of the table, signaling the onset of the fire.

Security personnel at the restaurant responded quickly to the sound and discovered that flames had already ignited decorations and the restaurant's thatched roof, made from alang-alang. Despite attempts to extinguish the fire using portable fire extinguishers, the flames spread rapidly due to the flammable materials, overwhelming initial firefighting efforts.

As the situation escalated, the restaurant staff contacted local fire services, with ten fire engines deployed to the scene. Firefighters battled the blaze for approximately two hours and 40 minutes, ultimately bringing it under control, but not before significant damage occurred.

In addition to the destruction of the restaurant, four motorcycles parked nearby were also engulfed in flames. The vehicles included three Yamaha Nmax models with license plates DK 5123 AFM, DK 2758 KBA, and DK 6740 ADP, along with a Honda Scoopy, plate number DK 6134.

Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported as a result of the fire. However, the total material losses have yet to be assessed, as officials continue to investigate the incident. The Kuta Police are working closely with the Bali Police's Forensic Laboratory to determine the exact cause of the fire, which they suspect originated from the helium balloon.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential hazards associated with helium balloons, particularly in settings where open flames are present. Authorities are expected to issue warnings and safety guidelines to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
