Flooding Affects Five Bali Regions as Tropical Disturbance 93S Strikes

In a troubling turn of events, five districts across Bali have been inundated by flooding linked to Tropical Disturbance 93S, with reports indicating that the rainfall has affected over 50 households and numerous buildings since December 12, 2025. The Bali Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) has confirmed the escalating situation, which began in Karangasem and rapidly spread to Denpasar and Badung, before impacting Gianyar and Jembrana.

The heavy rainfall commenced on December 15 at approximately 5:00 PM Central Indonesia Time (WITA), resulting in floodwaters reaching unprecedented levels. In Gianyar, some roads experienced water levels exceeding one meter, leading to the collapse of residential walls and significant disruption to public access routes. BPBD Bali chief I Gede Agung Teja Bhusana Yadnya confirmed that the ongoing unstable weather conditions could persist for several more days, raising concerns about the potential for further incidents.

As the flooding unfolded, the impact was felt acutely in Karangasem, where two school buildings were affected alongside residential areas. Denpasar reported 20 separate flood points, while Badung recorded 14, illustrating the widespread nature of the deluge. In Jembrana, four villages were submerged, and fallen trees obstructed critical transportation routes along the main Denpasar-Gilimanuk highway. This situation starkly contrasts with the major floods that struck Bali in September, when the rainfall patterns were markedly different.

One casualty has been reported: a foreign woman believed to have been swept away while riding a motorcycle, highlighting the severe risks posed by the current weather conditions. While no widespread evacuations have been ordered, several homes remain inundated, and those affected are urged to remain vigilant.

Gede Teja emphasized the necessity for Bali to bolster its resilience against increasingly erratic weather patterns, which are expected to become more frequent due to climate change. "These areas are known flood risk zones, but the intensity is increasing. What used to be manageable is now causing significant disruption to daily life," he stated. He called attention to the urgent need for improved environmental management, including enhanced drainage systems and better land-use planning to accommodate the realities of intense rainfall.

The BPBD's observations indicate that the current Tropical Disturbance 93S behaves differently from previous weather events, such as the Rosby Wave that contributed to the severe flooding in September. Nevertheless, the current system's influence on rainfall and wind intensity demands continuous monitoring as it moves away from the equator.
