Bali Tourism Sector Opens 5,000 Job Vacancies for Holiday Season

DENPASAR, Bali – The Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) Bali has announced the opening of more than 5,000 job vacancies ahead of the year-end holiday season, in a move expected to boost local employment and address the surge in tourist arrivals.

The vacancies span a wide range of positions, including front office staff, housekeeping, food and beverage service, chefs, spa therapists, and managerial roles. Most positions are intended for local Balinese workers, reflecting the industry's commitment to prioritizing the island's workforce.

To facilitate recruitment, a job fair will be held at the Bali Tourism Board from December 15 to 17, 2024. Registration is free and can be completed through the official PHRI Bali website, making the event accessible to job seekers across the province.

Strong Demand for Seasonal Staff

The announcement comes as Bali prepares for a peak influx of domestic and international tourists during the Christmas and New Year period. Hotels and restaurants typically require additional staff to handle the increased occupancy and dining demand, which often doubles during the holiday season.

"We are seeing a very strong recovery in tourism, and the demand for workers is higher than ever," said I Made Gede, a spokesperson for PHRI Bali. "This job fair is our way of ensuring that local communities benefit directly from the economic upturn."

According to PHRI data, the island's hotel occupancy rate is projected to reach 85% during the peak season, up from 70% in the same period last year. The association estimates that the additional staffing will generate significant income for thousands of families across Bali.

Focus on Local Workforce

The preference for local workers is a deliberate strategy to reduce unemployment and retain talent within the island. Bali's tourism sector employs over 1 million people, and the new vacancies are expected to provide a substantial boost to the local economy.

"We have always believed that tourism should be a force for good for our people," said Putu Ayu, a human resources manager at a major resort in Nusa Dua. "By prioritizing local hiring, we not only fill our immediate needs but also invest in the long-term development of our community."

The job fair will feature more than 50 participating companies, ranging from five-star resorts to boutique hotels and local restaurants. Each company will have dedicated booths where applicants can submit resumes, attend interviews, and receive on-the-spot job offers.

Government Support and Future Outlook

The provincial government has welcomed the initiative, emphasizing its alignment with broader efforts to strengthen Bali's tourism industry. Governor Wayan Koster has previously highlighted the importance of sustainable tourism that benefits local communities.

"This job fair is a perfect example of how the private sector and the government can work together to create opportunities," said a spokesperson from the Bali Tourism Office. "We encourage all eligible Balinese to take advantage of this chance."

Industry analysts note that the move also signals confidence in the long-term recovery of tourism, which was severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Bali's economy relies heavily on the sector, and the creation of thousands of jobs is seen as a positive indicator of returning stability.

For those unable to attend the fair in person, PHRI Bali has announced that online applications will continue to be accepted until the end of December. The association also plans to hold a similar event in early 2025 to address ongoing staffing needs.

With the holiday season fast approaching, the rush to fill positions is expected to intensify. The job fair is anticipated to draw thousands of applicants from across the island, eager to secure roles in one of the world's most sought-after travel destinations.

As Bali's tourism industry continues to rebound, the focus on job creation and local employment is likely to remain a key priority for both businesses and policymakers in the months ahead.
