Bali Attracts Over 6 Million International Tourists in Record Year

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the pristine beaches of Kuta, the sounds of laughter and chatter filled the air, blending with the rhythmic crash of waves. A group of Australian tourists, their faces lit with joy, shared stories of their adventures while sipping on fresh coconut water, completely immersed in the vibrant Balinese atmosphere. This scene, emblematic of Bali’s allure, underscores the island’s remarkable resurgence as a top global travel destination in 2024.

According to the Indonesian Central Statistics Agency, the year concluded with a staggering total of 12.66 million foreign tourist visits to Indonesia, marking a 20.7 percent increase compared to 2023. This significant uptick represents the highest annual tourism figures recorded in over five years, a testament to the nation’s recovery from the setbacks imposed by the pandemic. Speaking at a press conference in Jakarta on January 2, 2025, Pudji Ismartini, Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics, emphasized the impressive rebound: “Cumulatively from January to November 2024, the total number of foreign tourist visits reached 12.66 million.”

Among Indonesia’s myriad of enchanting islands, Bali stood out as the most sought-after destination, drawing millions of domestic and international tourists. The Bali Provincial Tourism Office reported that from January 2024 to December 29, the island welcomed approximately 6.3 million international visitors, surpassing its initial target of 5.5 million for the year. Tjokorda Bagus Pemayun, the Head of the Bali Provincial Tourism Office, acknowledged the achievement with a sense of pride, stating, “This means that Bali has also smashed its tourism targets for 2024. We are delighted to see the numbers exceed even our pre-pandemic levels.”

Despite a slight decline in November, when 1.09 million foreign tourists visited — an 8.58 percent drop from October — the overall trend indicated a robust recovery. This dip coincided with the low season for tourism, yet the year-end festivities saw a surge in interest, further solidifying Bali’s position as a premier holiday destination. Pemayun noted, “There is an additional 20 percent increase in visits during this Christmas and New Year holiday compared to before.”

Tourism to Bali was particularly buoyed by arrivals from Australia, India, and China, reflecting a diverse range of visitors attracted to the island’s unique culture, stunning landscapes, and warm hospitality. Looking ahead, Pemayun set an ambitious goal for 2025, aiming for 6.5 million international arrivals while emphasizing the importance of cultivating high-quality tourism. He remarked, “The most important thing is not only that, but what we expect is foreign tourists with longer stays, more spending money, and respect for local culture and society.”

However, the resurgence of tourism has not been without its challenges. Pemayun acknowledged the impact of recent natural disasters and negative incidents on travel trends, stating, “Yes, of course, negative information from the incident certainly had an impact.” Yet, optimism prevails as interest in travel to Bali remains strong, with tourism stakeholders expressing confidence in the island’s continued appeal.

The celebrations at I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport on December 31, 2024, featured traditional Balinese cultural performances, including gamelan music and dance, as passengers departed for the last flights of the year. Ahmad Syaugi Shahab, the General Manager of the airport, expressed his vision for the airport as more than just a transit hub, stating, “The airport must be a showcase for Indonesian culture, especially Bali, as well as a place where pleasant and memorable experiences are created.”
